OpenAI lawyers question Meta’s role in Elon Musk’s $97B takeover bid

Court documents show OpenAI is pressing Meta to provide records that could demonstrate whether it worked with Elon Musk and xAI on a possible investment or acquisition plan for the ChatGPT-maker.
The filing, made public Thursday, is part of Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI. It states that Meta was subpoenaed in June for documents linked to Musk’s unsolicited $97 billion takeover bid in February, which OpenAI declined. It remains unclear whether such documents exist.
The subpoena is part of Musk’s larger case disputing OpenAI’s transition of its for-profit arm into a public benefit corporation, which the company says is necessary to raise capital and prepare for a future public offering. Musk has argued the move strays from the company’s founding mission.
Meta’s legal team has filed to block the subpoena, saying that Musk and xAI could provide the necessary information. The company also maintains its internal deliberations on OpenAI’s restructuring are unrelated to the case.
